DESCRIPTION:History of Hurray for Buttons Day\nButtons are made from almost any material in the world from plastic to metal. Their composition often reflects the popular materials of the era in which they were made. Today\, the most common materials are hard plastic\, metals\, seashells\, or wood. They were once made by artisans\, artists\, and craftspeople\, out of raw materials or found objects such as fossils\, or a combination of both. Nowadays\, factories produce them in large quantities. \nButton collecting is quite popular in the United States. People collect buttons for a variety of reasons; for future use\, for casual collecting\, or for competitive collecting. Hobbies magazine organized a hobby show in Chicago in which button collectors participated. Later that year\, they formed the National Button Society and held their first button show. \nMany state and local button clubs were formed in the following decade\, holding their own button shows. The National Button Society has over 3\,000 members on four different continents. Saturday May 9 from Noon to 6:00 PM EST.\nWorkshop with David Owen Hastings (as seen in Quiltfolk magazine\, issue 32/Washington) \nBreak free from traditional machine quilting using your walking foot and a domestic machine. Leave behind previous notions of stitching in the ditch or overall quilting. \nWorkshop Overview\nPREPARE IN ADVANCE 3 – 6 small quilt sandwiches from provided designs: these will be the canvases for your machine quilting artistry! \nTAKE INSPIRATION from the piecing to stitch an initial quilting motif. \nOVERLAY a new machine quilting motif\, using a different thread color with new positioning\, and allowing the motifs to overlap. \nLAYER additional modern motifs using a third and fourth thread color to add more texture and depth. Ramp up the texture with some big stitch hand quilting. \nYou will leave the workshop with concrete skills for a modern\, layered approach to walking foot quilting. Bonnie is a talented quilter and fiber artist who has been studying this art form. Karen is a quilter and crafter who enjoyed a lifelong interest in fabric and color.\nThe workshop will entail a brief description about the history of Kawandi and the methods used to create these wonderful textile art pieces. Participants will assemble and stitch a small Kawandi of their own using the materials provided. The texture is just amazing!!! DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the art and heritage of quilting at the annual A Mountain Quiltfest. Quilters from all around will come together in Pigeon Forge for this ultimate quilting event. Quilters have the opportunity to attend classes that are based on skill level and technique. There will also be a quilt show that displays a variety of quilts for your viewing pleasure. Quilt Show dates are June 8 – 11\, 2026. \nQuilters can choose between different categories from which they can enter their quilts to compete. At these special presentations at our show since their inception in 2008\, Jan Wass and Merikay Waldvogel surprise us with a group of antique quilts\, many of which have never been shown publicly before. \nA team of quilt history colleagues Jan Wass\, Cindy Stuart and\, Merikay will date the quilts based on the quilts’ fabrics\, patterns and styles. Expect to hear some good stories and learn something about dating old quilts. Visitors may bring quilts to show if time permits. Photos may be taken and questions/comments from the audience are encouraged. There is no additional charge for this event. \nMerikay Waldvogel is a nationally known quilt collector\, researcher and writer. Her books include: Quilts of Tennessee\, Soft Covers for Hard Times\, Patchwork Souvenirs of the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair\, and Southern Quilts of the Civil War. In 2009\, she was inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame for her work as a quilt historian and author. She has been a member of Smoky Mountain Quilters of Tennessee since 1986. \nJan Wass is a researcher and writer and a retired curator of Decorative Arts at the Illinois State Museum. Her interest\, exceeding more than thirty years\, centers around textiles and their history\, with a special interest in Illinois Amish Quilts. She wrote the book Illinois Amish Quilts: Sharing Threads of Tradition. \nCindy Stuart is a certified Quilt Appraiser\, and is studying for Quilt Judging certification.
