DESCRIPTION:Cabarrus Quilter’s Guild Workshop \nTuesday\, May 12th \nSulky free motion template class: learn the basics of free-motion quilting: proper feet to use\, how to create the stitch length and control the stitches.  Learn techniques and control necessary to thread sketch any straight-line design from a child’s drawing to art work.  Learn how to transfer a design into fabric using stabilizers. The design is printed on a wash away paper and placed on top of the cloth. Students follow the out line of the design to create the free motion on the fabric.  Entire kits (like in picture) are available for $25 (preorder)or just the template paper for $5. DESCRIPTION:Karen Lowder and Bonnie Preslar will lead a workshop on the ancient Art of Kawandi\, a hand-quilting technique of the Siddi community of India. Bonnie is a talented quilter and fiber artist who has been studying this art form. Karen is a quilter and crafter who enjoyed a lifelong interest in fabric and color.\nThe workshop will entail a brief description about the history of Kawandi and the methods used to create these wonderful textile art pieces. Participants will assemble and stitch a small Kawandi of their own using the materials provided. The texture is just amazing!!! At these special presentations at our show since their inception in 2008\, Jan Wass and Merikay Waldvogel surprise us with a group of antique quilts\, many of which have never been shown publicly before. \nA team of quilt history colleagues Jan Wass\, Cindy Stuart and\, Merikay will date the quilts based on the quilts’ fabrics\, patterns and styles. Expect to hear some good stories and learn something about dating old quilts. Visitors may bring quilts to show if time permits. Photos may be taken and questions/comments from the audience are encouraged. There is no additional charge for this event. \nMerikay Waldvogel is a nationally known quilt collector\, researcher and writer. Her books include: Quilts of Tennessee\, Soft Covers for Hard Times\, Patchwork Souvenirs of the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair\, and Southern Quilts of the Civil War. In 2009\, she was inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame for her work as a quilt historian and author. She has been a member of Smoky Mountain Quilters of Tennessee since 1986. \nJan Wass is a researcher and writer and a retired curator of Decorative Arts at the Illinois State Museum. Her interest\, exceeding more than thirty years\, centers around textiles and their history\, with a special interest in Illinois Amish Quilts. She wrote the book Illinois Amish Quilts: Sharing Threads of Tradition. \nCindy Stuart is a certified Quilt Appraiser\, and is studying for Quilt Judging certification.
